Biography Mary Wade

Mary Wade was transported to New South Wales at the age of 11 in 1789. She had been found guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to death by hanging at her trial. However, as was often the case in such trials, her death sentence was commuted to transportation to the penal colony of New South Wales for life.

Dr. Wade knew how to use her science for the broader community and demonstrated that academic rigour applied to important pure science can have long-lasting benefits for communities throughout the state. Her scientific legacy is wide and varied and reflects an academic rigour applied to a very wide group of fossils. During that time she made a major contribution to the knowledge of the strange fossils of jellyfish and other problematic remaiuns, which had been found in the Ediacara Hills in the Flinders Ranges. Mary Julia Wade was born in South Australia and soennt her early childhood with her parents, Chris and Nora, and brother Bill on a grazing property in the northeast of South Australia.

When she was seven the family moved to Thistle Island in the Spencer Gulf, where she first developed an interest in geology. Initially, she was educated by correspondance until she was sent, on a scholarship, to the Wilderness School in Adelaide as a border. She studied for her Bachelor of Science in geology at Adeliade University before undertaking postgraduate studies. She undertook research into tertiary aged microfossils fro her Ph.D under the guidance of Professor Martin Glaessner. In the early 1980's, some diligent family members did their research and published a book titled ”Mary Wade to Us”. It told the early stories and traced the family trees of thousands of Mary's descendants.
The family became destitute and pleaded to the Governor of the time, Governor Thomas Brisbane, for aid. They recovered with Mary and Jon going on to own 62 acres in Illawarra . The youngest ever convict to be transported to Australia at the age of 11. Her hideous crime was that she stole another girls clothes and for that she was sentenced to death by hanging. Luckily for her, an issue relating to George III and his mental health meant that all the women on death row had their death sentence changed to living in Australia.
